I am writing to ask if you’d be interested in being a mentor to the younger members of SPR – also called jSPR members.
I brought the idea of jSPR to the SPR Board several years ago. With the Board’s blessing, and your help, our goal is to address the unique needs of pediatric radiology fellows, radiology residents interested in our field, and those attendings just starting out in pediatric radiology. Ultimately we hope we will improve recruitment, retention, and satisfaction of junior members of our community.
One of the core elements of jSPR is the creation of a mentoring system with established members of our field (such as you). In our first jSPR newsletter, Lane Donnelly (Chair, SPR Career & Leadership Committee) and I introduced the concept to the jSPR population and we are pleased with the enthusiastic responses we have received.
The primary mentor responsibility is communication. We’ll try to assign geographically, but the phone and email will be very useful tools. If both assigned mentor and “mentee” attend the national SPR meeting, this would be an ideal setting to meet.
All we need from you is a little time, energy, dedication, humor and the willingness to meet or speak with your mentee(s) as described above. We want to make it clear that we value this next generation as future leaders of our specialty.
Please let me know via email if you agree to be a jSPR mentor, and if so, how many jSPR members you can realistically work with. Also, let me know if you are planning on attending the SPR meeting this year. Lane Donnelly and I plan on pairing mentors with mentees after hearing from you, and we would like to announce this initiative and introduce you to your mentee(s)- should you both be attending- at this year’s SPR meeting in Miami.
Till then, thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing you in Miami!
