This year, as we mark SPR’s 50th meeting, we are struck once again by the impact of individuals with good ideas. In 1958, a few inventive souls thought it would be interesting to assemble with other pediatric radiologists to a pediatric radiology “jam” session. 33 people attended that meeting at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC and the SPR was born.
So much has happened in medicine, in radiology and in pediatric radiology in the intervening years. By 2007, new generations of pediatric radiologists suggested that the SPR sponsor an array of new activities: ALARA meetings, Cardiac imaging meetings, Child Abuse Committee, a workshop on MR Urography, an Education summit, a pediatric radiology nurse leadership meeting and a member’s list serv to name only the most recent additions.
Arrangements for the SPR 2007 assembly of North American pediatric radiologists are all but complete. The plans have benefited tremendously from the great ideas of the members.
We hope you have made your plans to attend. If you are still deciding – or negotiating time away with your colleagues – visit the Meeting page of our website (www.pedrad.org) for all the details on the program and hotel arrangements.
Thanks are due to Don Frush for his assembly and coordination of the outstanding roster of speakers for the postgraduate course “New Perspectives on Old Diseases: Advances in Neurological, Cardiovascular and Musculoskeletal Imaging in Children. Both SAM and CME credit are offered through participation in this course.
Thanks also to Lane Donnelly for the line-up of workshops, including offerings from our colleagues in ESPR, AOSPR and SLARP.
The Research Foundation’s Art Show and Auction has been renamed in honor and memory of our good friend Hooshang Taybi. Thanks to Jane McMillan for her work in organizing this event and to all the members who have made donations. View the auction catalog on the SPR website.
This communication includes the agenda for the Members Business meeting and the ballots for the election of the leadership slate (developed by the Nominating Committee), the election of new members of the Nominating Committee and for the bylaws amendments. Active members are encouraged to submit their ballots.
The complete text of the bylaws changes are posted online, but members may also request a copy mailed to them by contacting Jennifer Boylan at email@example.com or 703-648-0681.
In short, the Bylaws Committee (George Taylor, Chair, and Members, Donald Frush and Carlos Sivit) describe the changes as accomplishing the following: streamlining admission to membership, simplifying other administrative processes and clarifying committee roles.
We encourage you to attend the Business meeting, when SPR Board Chair, George Taylor, will give a summary of a soon-to-be-published study he has conducted on the state of our profession and announce the various ballot results. SPR president, Marilyn Goske, will announce two new SPR initiatives.
Finally, this communication also includes a letter from Rafael Rivera of the JSPR group inviting you to volunteer to be a mentor to a younger colleague. If you have friends, if people tell you they like you and you have a pleasant personality, we ask you to seriously consider volunteering for this new program. If you do not get along with people, we ask you to consider a different volunteer position. (Are you smiling?) Seriously, we do not anticipate that this activity would be burdensome and it will likely be quite enjoyable.
At the SPR member reception held during RSNA 2006, we invited SPR members to share their thoughts. Historian Alan Schlesinger developed a special presentation from that footage that will have its world premier at the legacy reception on Wednesday evening in Miami.
If you have an idea or an issue you wish brought to our attention, contact any member of the Board or the applicable Committee chair. The SPR Board meets face-to face twice per year (RSNA and SPR), and we conduct up to four conference call meetings as well. We are prepared to respond to proposals from the members and committees.
We hope to see you all in Miami.
