2013 course details

The national pediatric radiology one-day course was carried out on Saturday December 14th in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the auspices of the WFPI. The course was a joint effort of the Radiological Society of Ethiopia and the CHOP Pediatric Radiology International Outreach Program. It received financial support from the Ethiopian Medical Association, the Department of Radiology of CHOP, the Global Health Center of CHOP and 3 other institutions in the USA through the honorarium Prof. Kassa Darge was able to generate as an invited professor.

The venue was an excellent downtown hotel and the course was well attended by most of the country's radiologists and some pediatricians and pediatric surgeons. There were over 80 participants. The 3 faculty members included Dr. Janet Reid, Dr. Sabah Servaes and Prof. Kassa Darge. They gave a total of 13 lectures. In addition, one of Prof. Darge's fellows had prepared some pediatric radiology unknown cases. Over half of the attendees submitted their diagnoses to these cases and one won the prize. The best part of the meeting was the very active participation of the audience with many questions and comments after each lecture. The feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive and many stated that the topics discussed were highly relevant to their daily practice.

The course will be repeated in August 2014.

Visiting professors

In addition to the 2013 course, the 3 faculty members were visiting professors in the Department of Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Addis Ababa University over a period of 2 weeks. They gave the morning and lunch lectures for the radiology residents and participated in daily routine activities of the Department - reading out with residents and also carrying hands-on ultrasound teachings. Two of them were also external oral board examiners for the graduating final year radiology residents. Furthermore, in the presence of the 2 selected faculty members for the international pediatric radiology fellowship, the curriculum was finalized with preparations made to start the fellowship this month.

2012: Teaching & Training

Under the curatorship of Prof. Kassa Darge, 4 delegates from CHOP and a bolt-on delegate from AfSPI / SASPI participated in a training and teaching visit to Addis Ababa in December 2012. A one week lecture program was delivered with onsite training in X-ray reporting, ultrasound and interventional / biopsy techniques. In addition a combined team examined final year radiology trainees as external examiners with a significant pediatric imaging component. Lastly, the team presented lectures for a paediatric radiology CME program to the Ethiopian Radiological society. Significant links were developed with staff and a list of radiologists interested in pediatric imaging issues was developed for addition as members into AfSPI and therefore into WFPI.
